Tribute (A Riddle)

MANY AN HOUR WOULD I GLADLY SPEND
GAZING, AND THUS CONTENT TO GAZE, ON ONE
MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN MAN DESERVES TO BE.
LOOK AT HIS FACE--A FACE TO HAUNT A DREAM--
ETHEREAL, A VISION OR A SHADE
AND NOT A CREATURE BOUND BY MORTAL WAYS.
NOR YET AN ANGEL, THOUGH HE THUS APPEAR--
UNLESS HE BE LATE FALLEN FROM THE STARS,
HAVING REBELLED AGAINST THE SPHERE OF HEAVEN,
COME SEEKING OUT THE UNDERWORLD OF EARTH--
AMID THE DECADENCE OF CIGARETTES AND JA-
DED LAUGHTER.
